As a consultant called upon to resolve problems arising from confusion, disorder, and ignorance, I can state without equivocation that clarity is the one quality required at every level of business operation and which must be incorporated into everything the business does, internally and externally. If your staff aren’t sure what to do, when, or how, then the work they’re assigned will suffer and clients will become dissatisfied and take their business elsewhere. If your clients don’t understand their responsibilities and deliverables to expect, then you again risk client dissatisfaction.
According to Forbes magazine , “clarity in thought, word, and deed is a skill that can be cultivated over time. Clarity is a habit and like any habit, it takes constant reinforcement.” The key to clarity rests in definition. We’re not talking Merriam-Webster here. To define something, one must first analyze it. Analysis leads to understanding which then guides the description that defines the process, action, product, or service. Achieve definition through clear communication via storytelling, questions and answers, and simple, straightforward language. In other words, say what you mean. Save the euphemisms, innuendos, and high-dollar vocabulary for fiction and poetry.
